John A. Hild, Jr., helped to save Mary L. McPherson from burning, Fallston, Maryland, August 7, 1985. Seven months pregnant, Mrs. McPherson, 27, was trapped in her burning car after a highway accident involving two trucks. Hild, 28, truck driver, approached her car as flames issued along its driver’s side, the door of which he found jammed. Grasping the door’s window frame, Hild pulled, breaking the glass. With flames inside the car, Hild reached in, unfastened Mrs. McPherson’s seat belt, and tried, unsuccessfully, to pull her out. Another man joined Hild, but together they could not pull her out. The man then went to the other side of the car, where he and a third man pulled Mrs. McPherson through the passenger window as Hild pushed from the driver’s side. Hild and the other men then carried Mrs. McPherson to safety moments before the interior of the car was engulfed in flames. Hild was treated for cuts and back strain, and he recovered. Mrs. McPherson recovered from cuts and bruises and a month later gave birth to a healthy baby boy. 60625-7014
