Jimmie Allen McMillan saved Betty J. Cox from burning, Catoosa, Oklahoma, October 22, 1978. When the two-door sedan in which she was riding was struck from behind, Mrs. Cox, 57, suffered injuries and, unconscious, lay on the floor behind the front seat as flames appeared on the vehicle’s trunk. McMillan, 34, construction superintendent, ran to the passenger door but could not open it. He broke out the glass of the window and reached into the automobile as the flames spread on the outside. Probing, he located Mrs. Cox and, after tilting the back of the front passenger seat forward, was able to pull her through the window opening. As another man aided McMillan in carrying Mrs. Cox away from the sedan, an explosive spread of flames filled the interior. Mrs. Cox recovered from her injuries.
