Jessie J. Knowles, Jr., saved an indeterminate number of persons from being struck by a runaway vehicle, Nashville, Tennessee, November 24, 1987. A 66-year-old man was driving a truck on a heavily traveled portion of an interstate highway when he slumped over the steering wheel, sending the truck out of control on the highway. Driving nearby, Knowles, 32, newspaper delivery man, positioned his van in front of the truck. Carefully gauging the speed of the two vehicles, Knowles allowed the truck’s front end to strike the rear bumper of the van. Knowles then applied the van’s brakes and brought both vehicles to a stop over the course of several hundred feet. The truck driver was taken to the hospital but could not be revived.
