Jesse L. Jones died attempting to save Thomas N. Duncan from drowning, Sumner, Missouri, July 21, 1935. While wading in the Grand River, Thomas, 11, stepped into a hole, in which the water was 10 feet deep, and drifted farther from wadable water. Jones, 42, farmer, who was fully clothed, waded hurriedly to the hole and plunged into the deep water. He swam a stroke or two to Thomas and took hold of him. Immediately Thomas threw his arms around Jones’s neck, Jones being submerged and Thomas’s head being at the surface. Thomas clung to Jones and climbed higher above the surface. The two drifted slowly. Two boys rowed a boat from the bank to Thomas and pulled him into the boat. Jones did not rise to the surface and was drowned.
