Jamie Masyk helped to save Walter S. Childs from drowning, Arnes, Manitoba, July 30, 1991. Childs, 57, was swimming in Lake Winnipeg when he was carried beyond his depth by rough water conditions. Panicking, he submerged repeatedly and called for help. Jamie, 12, student, and a friend, also 12,were swimming nearby and heard him. They swam to Childs and established a hold on him, then, despite being submerged by Childs, who outweighed Jamieby more than 100 pounds, began to take him to shore. Meanwhile, Childs’s wife and daughter secured a child’s life jacket, attached one end of a ropeto it, and waded out toward the boys. Jamie swam in to meet them, then took the life jacket back to Childs, who grasped it. Jamie and his friend then aided Childs to wadable water as his wife and daughter pulled on the rope. They then dragged Childs, who was losing consciousness, out of the water. Childs required hospital treatment for water in his lungs and pulled muscles. Jamie was shaken and tired but otherwise uninjured.
