James William Anderson died attempting to save William A. Anderson from drowning, Chesterville, Ohio, April 20, 1974. While swimming in a water-filled gravel pit, William, 45, suddenly went under in deep water. After reappearing briefly, he submerged again and remained beneath the surface. Although he was a non-swimmer, James, 16, construction worker, jumped into the water and attempted to reach William. James floundered and sank, his hand appearing once at the surface. Both James and William drowned.
