James W. Ivey, Jr., 15, schoolboy, saved Tobias K. Culp, Jr., 17, schoolboy, from drowning, New London, North Carolina, May 14, 1945. While James, Tobias, and two other boys were paddling a flatboat on a pond, one end dipped under the surface; and James, Tobias, and one of the others jumped into water 15 feet deep and were briefly submerged. Tobias flailed his arms and called for help. James, who was lighter by 40 pounds, swam 15 feet to him; and a struggle ensued in which both were submerged, James freeing himself under the surface. The boy in the boat paddled toward James, who got hold of the boat and pulled Tobias to it. Tobias tried to climb into the boat, which sank. James swam 10 feet to Tobias, and another struggle ensued, James freeing himself as before. He then swam 45 feet toward the bank, got a rope, and swam back to Tobias. Placing the rope in Tobias’s hand, James towed him close to the bank; and another boy helped to pull Tobias out of the water. Tobias was unconscious but was revived. James was tired. 40913-3487
