James W. Hallmark, 22, teacher, saved W. Lee Flannagian from drowning, Iuka, Mississippi, July 23, 1911. Lee, 17, farmer, who could not swim, and another boy jumped into Lake Como from a skiff which they believed was sinking. Men in bathing suits would not go to the rescue at Hallmark’s request, and he, fully dressed except coat and vest, waded 10 feet and swam about 70 feet to Lee, who was struggling in water about 10 feet deep. Lee’s companion had drowned. Lee grabbed Hallmark, and they struggled desperately, going beneath the surface two or three times. Two men swam out to a point near them and then returned to the bank without giving assistance. The skiff had drifted farther out into the lake. Lee finally became exhausted, and Hallmark was then able to swim slowly about 65 feet with him to wadable water. By that time Lee was unconscious. He was revived. 8369-1104
