James T. Mason, 48, saloon keeper, helped to save Mary E. Dolan, 23; Von L. Holliday, 20, mechanic; Carroll V. Rector, 23, farmer, and William B. Sweet, 18, clerk, from drowning, Grand Rapids, Wisconsin, May 26, 1909. At midnight, Mason, with another man, in a 15-foot boat, rowed 600 feet to a capsized launch, which had been carried over a dam in the Wisconsin River. They took the four persons clinging to it aboard. The heavily loaded craft, in darkness, was guided to shore with great difficulty, through rapids in which many rocks extended above the surface of the water. 4513-427
