James T. Manion rescued Jessie V. Sutton from assault, Carol City, Florida, January 14, 1990. Mrs. Sutton, 42, exited her car in the parking lot of a private club and was confronted by two armed men, who then attempted to rob and perhaps abduct her. She struggled against them. Manion, 41, monitor, witnessed the attack from inside the club. He immediately grabbed a cue, ran from the club, and struck one of the assailants with the stick, causing him to stop struggling with Mrs. Sutton. Manion then turned his attention to the other assailant but was shot in the torso by one of them. The assailants fled. Manion sustained disabling gunshot injuries which required numerous operations during a hospital stay of more than one year in duration.
