James T. Love saved John H. Mayfield and George P. McPherson from burning, Hammond, Texas, September 23, 1938. An automobile in which elevator operators Mayfield, 18, and McPherson, 22, were riding collided with another automobile, skidded to a point five feet from a gasoline pump, and caught fire, the rear of the automobile inside and outside being sprayed with gasoline. Gasoline flames burned on the ground in patches that extended four feet from the automobile and were a foot to three feet apart and 10 inches high. Love, 58, merchant, went to the doorway of the automobile, got hold of Mayfield, and jerked him out. He called for aid without response and again went to the doorway, but twice surges of flame forced him back. Reaching into the automobile, he got hold of McPherson and pulled him out. Mayfield and McPherson had sustained serious injuries, McPherson also having sustained serious burns. They recovered. Love sustained minor burns, and his shoes and trousers’ legs were scorched. 37847-3145
