James S. Menteth, 74, farmer, saved Edith H., 35; Eleanor, 34, and Emmett S. Gleason, 12, from drowning, Cheshire, New York, September 2, 1915. Emmett and his aunt, Eleanor, were bathing in Canandaigua Lake and became distressed in deep water. Another aunt, Edith, waded toward them but also became distressed. Menteth had a weak heart and had been warned by his doctor not to swim, but he swam, fully dressed, to one of the women and brought her to shallow water. He then swam 38 feet to the other woman, who was unconscious, and brought her to shallow water, and then returned to Emmett and swam 38 feet with him to wadable water. Menteth’s knees gave way when he had reached water waist deep, but he recovered after a little rest. 15397-1297
