James R. Barkley rescued Ruth D. Lustik from assault, Texarkana. Texas, January 21, 1987. Miss Lustik, 36, was abducted at gunpoint by a man in the restaurant of a motor inn where she worked. When Barkley, 26, a cook at the restaurant, learned of the incident, he pursued the assailant and confronted him in one of the motor inn’s corridors. Although the assailant threatened him, Barkley charged the assailant and grappled with him, allowing Miss Lustik to flee. During the struggle, Barkley was shot once in the chest. Another man then helped to subdue the assailant. Barkley was hospitalized overnight for treatment of his wound.
