James Patrick Knight, Sr., died attempting to save Rudolph Dyer from suffocation, Washington, Mississippi, September 1, 1940. Dyer, 21, was overcome by gas in an underground silo and lay on silage 25 feet below the open top. After sending for help, Knight, 35, farm hand, who knew there was gas in the silo, sat in a loop of a rope and lowered himself to Dyer. He tried to pass the free end of the rope under Dyer, then slumped to his knees and called for help. Two other men arrived and tried to pull Knight out, but the loop came off and he fell across Dyer. One of the men then had the rope tied around his chest and was lowered to Knight. Almost immediately he became unconscious and was pulled to the top. After he was revived, he was again lowered into the silo. He tied the rope around Knight and, dizzy and unsteady, was pulled to the top. Knight then was pulled out; he could not be revived. Greatly dazed and nauseated, the other man was lowered again, at his insistence, to Dyer. He tied the rope around Dyer and they were drawn to the top, but Dyer was dead.. 38907-3230
