James Parks Jones, 17, student, helped to save Bertha L. Pillsbury, 17, from drowning, Yosemite, California, August 12, 1907. Bertha had become frightened when carried beyond her depth in the Merced River. A young man swam to her, but when she grasped him they began struggling together. Parks, who shortly before had sprained his neck, witnessed the struggle between the pair and swam 75 feet to them. He grabbed Bertha and swam 40 feet with her, being dazed and weak when he got to the bank. The young man swam to shallow water, almost exhausted. 3881-430
