James P. Mallette died as the result of attempting to save Daniel L. Kline from suffocation, Shelby, Montana, September 27, 1979. Kline, 30, was overcome while working in a sewer manhole and collapsed on a shelf near the bottom. Mallette, 27, electrician, entered the manhole to aid Kline but also lost consciousness. Firemen, using rescue equipment, removed the two men. Kline recovered, but Mallette never regained consciousness and died three days later.
