James McCormick, 22, farmhand, rescued Isaac W. Wallace, 49, farmer, from a runaway, McGregor, Texas, August 14, 1916. While Wallace was climbing on a wagon to which a team of mules was hitched, the team started running away. Wallace stood on the doubletree with his back toward the mules and held to some benches with which the wagon was loaded. He held the lines in one hand but was unable to get into position to check the team. McCormick went to the road in front of the team, and as it swerved to pass him, he ran to the nearest mule and grasped its bridle close to the bit with one hand and its collar with the other hand. The mule pawed and jerked and reared and pulled McCormick off his feet various times, but he continued to hold it, going with the team and trying to hold it back while it ran 125 feet, through a barbed-wire fence into a field, where McCormick stopped it. Neither Wallace nor McCormick was injured. 17021-1539
