James F. McCollom, Jr., 15, student, attempted to save Frederick Chapin, 10, from drowning, New York, New York, January 4, 1915. Frederick broke through thin ice on Jamaica Bay, 150 feet from shore, where the water was 30 feet deep. McCollom approached the hole, grasped Frederick’s hand, and pulled him partly out, but McCollom then broke through also. He was pulled out by a companion and immediately returned to the hole and again broke through in an effort to seize Frederick. This time he got out without help. He saw men coming with a rope and left the scene. 17676-1273
