James D. Mulford, 62, insurance salesman, died as the result of attempting to save Calvin G. Foster, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, Sandy Creek, New York, July 25, 1950. While swimming in North Pond, Calvin became tired 150 feet from shore in water 5.5 feet deep between waves and was unable to return to wadable water because of a strong undercurrent. Waves three feet high broke over him, and he was submerged briefly several times. Mulford waded and jumped through waves to within 10 feet of Calvin but in attempting to swim the remaining distance was swept past Calvin and farther into deep water. A wave carried Calvin shoreward within reach of a young man, who aided him to shore. For an hour Mulford was seen floating inert 200 feet from shore. He drifted close to shore 45 minutes later and was carried to the beach by two men, but he could not be revived. Calvin recovered. 3684-42154
