James B. Haggerty died attempting to save Herman Tack from suffocation, Detroit, Michigan, December 24, 1926. Tack, 53, assistant foreman, was overcome by hydrogen sulphide in a tank car. Haggerty, 43, repairman, who realized a deadly gas was present in the tank and refused to take the time to have a rope tied to himself, grabbed a rope and descended a ladder to Tack. As he tried to put the rope around Tack, he was overcome. Tack and Haggerty were removed from the tank by men wearing oxygen masks after two other men had been overcome in attempts to rescue them.
