Jacob A. Kyser, 53, storekeeper, saved Frank C. Bosworth, 58, boatman, from drowning, Sylvan Beach, New York, December 5, 1922. Bosworth was on a barge, which in a severe storm on Oneida Lake broke loose from a tug and grounded in seven feet of water 900 feet from shore. The wind was blowing 50 m.p.h., and there were waves eight feet high. After several unsuccessful attempts had been made by others to take a rowboat to Bosworth, Kyser, who was a poor swimmer, with great difficulty rowed the boat against the wind and the waves from shore to the barge. Large timbers and other debris were in the water. As a wave rose almost level with the deck of the barge, Kyser backed his boat quickly against the barge, and Bosworth jumped into the boat. Kyser guided the boat with the oars as it was carried by wind and waves to shore. It had required 15 minutes to row to the barge. 23082-2034
