Jacob A. Greving helped to save Erin E. Mason from drowning, Quincy, Illinois, July 7, 1990. Erin, 8, was wading in the Mississippi River just off the south end of an island when she stepped into deeper water and, caught in the swift current, was unable to return to shore. She shouted for help. Nearby on the island, Jacob, 13, student, heard her and immediately swam to her. Erin grasped Jacob’s neck as Jacob then attempted to swim back to shore, but the current took them farther away. Two boaters saw them and approached, intercepting them at a point about 1,200 from the island. They pulled Erin and Jacob aboard, then returned them to shore. Exhausted from the rescue, Jacob had to be carried from the boat; he recovered that day.
