Jack Warford Henley, Jr., 18, schoolboy, saved Leonard F. Bell, 10, from drowning, St. Simon Island, Georgia, July 16, 1952. Leonard, a poor swimmer, was swept from a sandbar in the Atlantic Ocean by a tidal current and drifted into deep water 150 feet from shore. He called to Henley, who was 30 feet away, for help. As Henley approached, Leonard seized him around the neck and wrapped his legs around Henley’s waist. Henley submerged himself briefly, causing Leonard to release him. Obtaining a hold on Leonard, Henley swam 30 feet with him to wadable water and carried him to shore. Leonard had swallowed water, and Henley was fatigued. Both recovered. 3840-42714
