Jack J. Pierce rescued Donnel J. Marion from burning, Pittsburg, California, July 16, 1986. Marion, 42, was in his second-floor apartment when an explosion occurred and set fire to the apartment. Pierce, 38, maintenance man, ran to the apartment, opened the door, and shouted for Marion. Hearing him, Pierce entered the apartment, the walls and ceiling of which were aflame. Despite the intense heat, Pierce penetrated the apartment for about 25 feet, finding Marion in his bedroom. Pierce then seized Marion and dragged him from the apartment. Marion was hospitalized for burns. Pierce required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, and he recovered.
