J. Zophar Howell, 19, student, helped to save M. Lillian Creamer, 23, from drowning, Atlantic City, New Jersey, June 20, 1915. (See case of CHARLES G. MATLOCK, JR.) Upon learning of the accident, Howell entered the water and swam to Lillian, who was then 150 feet from shore. She seized him, but he freed himself and continued to support her until another man arrived with a rope, which proved useless. The three kept afloat with difficulty, trying to reach shallow water. A breaker separated the other two from Howell, and Lillian seized the other man and submerged him, but he rose and stunned her by a blow. Both men then seized her again and, after being carried 300 feet, finally succeeded in reaching wadable water. Howell suffered a chill but recovered. 14973-1181
