J. Wesley Jones, 56, driller, helped to save Cleveland J. Ault, 60, tool dresser, from suffocation, Crane, Texas, January 13, 1945. Ault was overcome by hydrogen sulphide gas in an eight-foot square cellar of an oilwell. Jones descended the well casing in the middle of the cellar 8.5 feet to the bottom, and Jeff Lambert followed him. Lambert made a slip knot loop in the end of a rope that was lowered, and Jones placed the loop around Ault under his arms. He and Lambert then raised Ault to his feet. As men at the top began to pull Ault up, Jones began to ascend the casing. When Jones was three feet above the bottom, he called to the men to stop pulling; and he adjusted the rope which had begun to slip from Ault. Dizzy and nauseated, Jones quickly climbed out. Ault was pulled out on the rope. Meanwhile Lambert was overcome. More than five minutes later he was rescued by a man who was protected by a mask and a rope. Jones recovered. Ault was revived in 15 minutes. 40744-3510
