J. Victor Hartman, 25, brakeman, saved Sarah C. Gardner, 58, from being killed by a locomotive, London Mills, Illinois, November 30, 1914. Mrs. Gardner, who was very hard of hearing, walked onto a track 10 feet in front of a locomotive that was moving at a speed of 12 m.p.h. Hartman ran 15 feet to her and crossed the track, carrying her along in his arms. Neither was injured, but the locomotive was so close that witnesses thought both had been struck. 14690-1299
