J. Henry Grimes, 24, electrician, saved Edward J. Crowe, 54, construction foreman, and Joseph C. Duncan, 37, chauffeur, from suffocation, Belmont, Massachusetts, January 10, 1917. Duncan and Crowe were overcome by illuminating gas in a gas-governor pit eight feet below street level. Other persons were afraid to enter the pit, and Grimes descended a ladder with a rope, fastened it around Crowe’s wrist, and ascended. He helped others to draw Crowe out and again descended and tied the rope to Duncan. Grimes then got out of the pit and assisted in raising Duncan. He was nauseated and felt dizzy the rest of the day. Duncan and Crowe were revived. 18767-1666
