J. Cornelius Allen, Sr., 49, railroad conductor, saved James Meighan, Jr., 3; Willard G. Hughes, 3, and Hugh Meighan, 4, from being killed by a train, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, October 14, 1943. The boys walked onto a track on which a freight train was approaching at a speed of 30 m.p.h. Allen ran to James, reaching him when the train was 125 feet from him. Clasping James under his arm, he stepped off the track and dropped him. He ran four feet, stepping over the rail, to Willard and Hugh, grasped them in his arms, turned, and stepped over the rail again and four feet from it, the locomotive then passing at unreduced speed.
