J. Chester Listermann, 21, tinner, rescued Herbert Hager, 15, schoolboy, from a runaway, Newport, Kentucky, June 9, 1913. The front axle of a covered wagon broke, and the horse attached to the wagon ran away. The driver, holding to the reins, was thrown out. Herbert remained on the seat. Three or four men tried vainly to stop the horse, which was running at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Listermann seized the end gate of the wagon as it passed him and swung himself into the wagon. He crawled over the tops of some barrels in the wagon, leaped onto the back of the galloping horse, seized the bit rings, and sawed on them until the horse stopped. 11164-1287
