J. Brendan McHale, 13, schoolboy, died attempting to save Martin J. Hogan, 10, from drowning, Chicago, Illinois, July 12, 1915. Martin, a poor swimmer, thinking the water was shallow, jumped from a punt on a lagoon in Marquette Park. He sank in water that was over his head in depth, rose, and called for help. Brendan, who could swim only about 25 feet and was dressed, jumped into the water and swam four feet to Martin, but as he reached him, both boys sank. They drowned without having reappeared at the surface. 16030-1175
