J. Albert Kelk, 21, student, attempted to save Carl F. Dierker, Jr., 17, student, from drowning, Cairo, New York, June 18, 1919. Carl fell from a boat into Catskill Creek 30 feet from the bank, where the water was 20 feet deep. Kelk swam 105 feet to Carl, who was under water, and took hold of his shoulder. Carl then grasped Kelk around the neck. They struggled under the surface, and Kelk swallowed water and gradually became unconscious. Carl was drowned. Only the top of Kelk’s head appeared at the surface, and his young brother swam to him from the boat, grasped him, and swam with him to the bank. Kelk was revived. 18888-1686
