Ivan Eugene Goode died helping to save Elisabeth A. Simmons from drowning, Ducktown, Tennessee, August 9, 1984. Elisabeth, 7, fell into the swift, turbulent water of the Ocoee River a short distance downstream from a hydroelectric plant. Despite having a breathing disability from emphysema and a previous lung wound, Goode, 56, repairman, dived into the river and swam to Elisabeth. Elisabeth held onto Goode as they were carried by the swift current for about 1,200 feet. Elisabeth’s father then reached her and, with the aid of others, took her to safety. Goode was swept further downstream and drowned.
