Hoy C. Jones saved Lillian Reed from drowning, Syracuse, Indiana, June 29, 1930. While Hoy, schoolboy, and Lillian, both 17, and four others were in a rowboat in Dewart Lake 1,500 feet from shore, the boat was submerged in water 45 feet deep and all were thrown into the water. The stern end had an air chamber and remained at the surface. All came to the surface except Lillian, who held to the gunwale under water. Hoy took hold of the gunwale at the stern and lowered himself eight feet under the surface and grasped Lillian, who was unconscious. He broke her hold and took her to the surface. Another girl then grabbed Hoy around the neck from behind, causing him to release Lillian, but he freed himself while they were momentarily submerged. Taking hold of the other girl by the waist and holding to Lillian’s dress with his teeth, he supported both about two minutes. Another boat then drew near, and the girl broke away from his arm and swam to it. As she left Hoy, still another girl grabbed him around the neck from behind, and he supported her and Lillian briefly until the boat got alongside. Other boats soon arrived and took all to shore. Lillian was revived. 30991-2640
