Howell J. Lucier saved William J. Connolly from drowning, Northampton, Massachusetts, June 27, 1912. William, 9, who could not swim, jumped from a steep bank into the Mill River, although Howell, 13, schoolboy, had warned him not to go into the water. He went beneath the surface in water about six feet deep, and when he came up, he struggled and called for help. Howell, the only swimmer present, jumped into the water near him, and William grabbed Howell around the neck from behind and forced his head beneath the surface. Howell struggled to the surface, and William threw his legs around Howell’s waist. Howell then swam with great difficulty toward the opposite bank, and after swimming about 12 feet, he worked his way to the bank and sank down in shallow water, with William still clinging to him. Other boys ran to him and loosened William’s grip and helped Howell to the bank. He was faint from exertion and fright. 8823-876
