Howard R. Hummel died saving Clifford H. Kunkel from drowning, New Trenton, Indiana, June 18, 1933. While swimming in the Whitewater River, Clifford, 15, schoolboy, became exhausted, drifted in the current, and called for help. Hummel, 21, bookkeeper, waded from the bank and swam about 250 feet diagonally across the current to him. He had Clifford take hold of the shoulder straps of his bathing suit. Tired and winded, Hummel then swam toward the bank, but, seeing two men approaching in a boat, he trod water until the boat arrived. The men took Clifford into it. When they reached for Hummel, he had disappeared. An hour later his body was recovered, but he could not be revived. 33207-2764
