Howard Parker Martin died as the result of attempting to save LaMark O. Hicks from drowning, Greenwich, Connecticut, June 7, 1968. While wading in shallow water in a river, LaMark, 14, lost his footing and was swept by the current into deep water. He was submerged briefly and, flailing wildly, called for help. Howard, 14, schoolboy, swam to LaMark, who then was 50 feet from the bank and had sunk in deep water. After bringing LaMark to the surface, Howard began towing him toward the bank. LaMark panicked and grasped Howard by the throat. The two youths sank. Both drowned.
