Horace Eli Hatley, Jr., saved Alberto Camargo from burning, Columbia, South Carolina, November 10, 1969. At night an automobile containing Camargo, 22, U.S. Army sergeant, and another serviceman crashed into a tree, injuring both men. Fire broke out at the rear of the sedan. Horace, 16, high school student, ran to the vehicle, where outside flames rose 15 feet into the air and fire had spread to the interior. By then a man had arrived and had removed the other serviceman but had been unable to remove Camargo, who was caught in some manner. When the man retreated from the intense heat in the automobile, Horace entered the sedan and, kneeling on the seat within three feet of the interior flames, lifted and tugged on Camargo. Horace then backed out of the automobile, pulling Camargo with him. A few minutes later an explosion filled the sedan with flames.
