Herlan J. Fanning, 31, automobile mechanic, saved David E. Rumsey, 2, from being killed by a train, Britton, Oklahoma, October 30, 1946. David wandered from home onto a track on which a freight train was approaching at a rapid speed. Fanning ran 120 feet to David, who was crouched over the far rail, reaching him when the locomotive was eight feet from him. Without breaking his stride, Fanning hooked one arm under David and carried him over the rail. The train passed at a reduced speed of 20 m.p.h. and stopped when the locomotive was 375 feet beyond the point of rescue. 40953-3516
