Herbert S. Johnson, 22, structural iron worker, saved William Schloemer, 35, structural iron worker, from drowning, Suffield, Alberta, July 5, 1913. Schloemer, who could not swim, fell from a bridge into the Bow River. Johnson dived from a point about 24 feet above the water and reached him at a point 100 feet from the bank. He seized Schloemer and swam for the bank but made very slow progress. Five hundred and sixty feet below the bridge, a man waded out on a bar and took Schloemer from Johnson, but Johnson, who was nearly exhausted, was carried on downstream by the current. The man overtook and helped Johnson ashore 140 feet below where he had helped Schloemer. 11407-1332
