Herbert C. Heiland saved Thomas A. Sheckler from drowning, Parryville, Pennsylvania, December 18, 1939. Thomas, 8, broke through weak ice on a pond into water nine feet deep 20 feet from the bank. An end of a pipe was extended to him, but the ice broke under the pipe, and Thomas lost his hold and sank in the hole. From wadable water, Heiland, 26, laborer, who could not swim and who was heavily clothed, plunged 15 feet to the hole, stroking awkwardly. He groped under water, got hold of Thomas, and pulled him to the surface. Heiland briefly supported Thomas, who was dazed; and then one end of a ladder was shoved to him; and he and Thomas were pulled to wadable water. 38163-3154
