Henry M. McClain rescued Paul J. Greenlee from burning, Jackson, Mississippi, April 1, 1944. While Greenlee, 32, shipping clerk, McClain, 40, warehouseman, and a third man were checking produce in a warehouse cooler room into which natural gas had escaped, the electric motor of a refrigeration unit started; and flames broke out in the room. The third man ran through an open door into a corridor and sustained only superficial burns. McClain after running into the corridor heard Greenlee, who was dazed, scream for help. McClain ran back into the room to Greenlee, who groped 13 feet from the door in a space between stacked crates, which were burning in places. As McClain pulled Greenlee by a hand to the door, an explosion occurred forcing flames into the corridor and along it 23 feet and through a doorway to an outside platform. Both men were knocked to the floor, Greenlee losing consciousness momentarily. Crawling on his hands and knees, McClain dragged Greenlee to the platform, the flames having generally subsided. Greenlee was severely burned but recovered. McClain sustained serious burns and underwent hospital treatment, being disabled 14 months. 40975-3562
