Henry Hinchcliffe saved an indeterminate number of boys from drowning, Lawrence, Massachusetts, June 30, 1913. A runway extending from the bank to a bathhouse in the Merrimac River broke and allowed at least 30 boys to fall into water 14 feet deep. Henry, 17, baker’s apprentice, ran from the bank to the runway and pulled seven or eight boys on it. Then he jumped, fully dressed, into the water among the boys. He was seized by some of them, and his clothing was torn, but he freed himself and swam with four or five boys one at a time to the unbroken part of the runway. After five minutes he returned to the bank very tired. Eleven boys were drowned. 11299-1201
