Henry A. Massey, 30, weaver, saved John Nawrocki, 16, creeler, from drowning, Worcester, Massachusetts, January 7, 1915. John broke through the ice 75 feet from the bank of Stillwater Pond, where the water was six to eight feet deep. His three companions ran ashore, and a man who started to his rescue found the ice soft and retreated. Massey ran toward John but broke through the ice about 25 feet from him but as far from the bank. When both Massey and John had given up their attempts to get out onto the weak ice, a ladder with a rope attached was thrown to Massey, and he was drawn out of the hole. He then advanced toward John, threw him his ladder, and pulled him out. Both then held to the ladder and were drawn ashore by others, who held the rope attached to it. Neither was seriously affected. 14121-1230
