Henry A. Laughlin, 34, publisher, saved Mary Droney, 13, from drowning, Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 18, 1926. While sliding on honeycombed ice on the Charles River, Mary broke through into water 20 feet deep 30 feet from the bank. Laughlin took a step or two on the ice from the bank and then crawled to the hole. As he reached to take hold of Mary, the ice broke under him, and he and Mary were momentarily submerged. Laughlin grasped Mary, and she got hold of him around the neck. He supported her a moment and then grabbed a rope that was thrown to him. They were then drawn to the bank. 27296-2327
