Helen E. Mason attempted to save Edna M. Stevenson from drowning, Venango, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1924. Edna, 14, who could not swim, stepped into deep water while wading in French Creek. Miss Mason, 21, who was in wadable water 10 feet from her, swam to Edna and extended her hand. Edna got excited and put both her arms around Miss Mason’s neck and got on her back. Miss Mason struggled to get free, mostly under the surface, and became weakened by her efforts and Edna’s hold. They both sank and did not resurface. Another young woman then reached the bank, dived to their rescue, and towed them in an unconscious condition to near the bank. Miss Mason and Edna were revived. 24621-1960
