Hazel Marie Kaiser saved Marna L. Ische from drowning, Shorewood, Wisconsin, May 20, 1944. From a walk along the Milwaukee River, Marna, 10, stepped onto a steep bank which gave under her; and she fell into the water five feet below. She drifted to water 10 feet deep 11 feet from the bank. Miss Kaiser, 23, private secretary, who was heavily clothed, ran down steps to the walk, quickly removed her shoes, and slid down the bank into the water. She swam to Marna, who was flailing her arms, and took hold of her. Marna put her arms around Miss Kaiser’s neck, and Miss Kaiser swam to the bank but could not get footing. She got hold of the free end of a cable that lay within two feet of the water, the other end being attached to a sapling; and she and Marna held to it five minutes until three boys arrived, formed a chain, and pulled Marna and Miss Kaiser in turn onto the walk. 40208-3400
