Harvey W. Herman, 46, teamster, died attempting to save Fred Larue, Jr., 17, laborer, from drowning, Ottumwa, Iowa, June 25, 1929. While Fred was swimming in the Des Moines River, he was caught in an eddy 125 feet from the bank and was unable to swim out. Herman waded to within eight feet of Fred and shoved a heavy stick toward him. As he did this, Herman got into deep water and was whirled around in the current. He went under the surface and was drowned. Fred finally drifted out of the eddy to shallow water and waded to the bank. 29390-2396
