Harry L. Biggs, 28, miner and laborer, died attempting to save Guy W. Dotson, 35, miner, from suffocation, Douds Leando, Iowa, June 12, 1909. Dotson lay unconscious at the bottom of a shaft 30 feet deep, having been overcome following a powder blast. Biggs, who had seen him fall, asked to be lowered to him. He waited impatiently while a badly tangled rope was tied around him and then was lowered in a bucket. While going down, he removed the rope from around his body, and when he reached the bottom, he got out of the bucket and stooped to tie the rope around Dotson. As he did so, he was overcome and fell on top of Dotson. Both were dead when taken out about 15 minutes later. 8526-855
