Harry E. McHugh, 37, merchant, saved H. Clayton Dutcher, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Charlevoix, Michigan, February 22, 1919. Clayton broke through ice on Round Lake 50 feet from the bank and fell into water 20 feet deep. The ice broke off each time he grasped it. McHugh ran out on the ice to within about four feet of Clayton and then broke through. He grasped Clayton around the waist and supported him as he trod water. After making several attempts to lift Clayton out of the hole and to get a hold on the ice, McHugh succeeded in getting a hold. Pieces of plank were slid toward him from a dock at the bank, and he rested his arm on one of them at the edge of the hole and got hold of a rope which was thrown to them. He and Clayton were then drawn out of the hole and over the ice to the dock. 19948-1819
